Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a kid. Aunt Denise worked in the evening shift as a nurse, so she could indulge her passion for theater and art in the daytime. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay learned by example that art can be an avenue for action. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially aware and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay was raised together with her parents in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to sit at the house of one of the members of the jury as well as go through their garbage. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision not to pursue a career in journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay joined a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
